On May 7, 1988, the Elmhurst and Oak Brook Historical Societies dedicated a Mammoth Springs historical marker on the grounds of the Hyatt Regency Oak Brook (now Doubletree Chicago Oak Brook). A beautiful boulder and plaque were placed on the site, marking the site of the first water supply for Elmhurst. Legend says that in 1861 an artesian well suddenly appeared on the site with such an explosion that the neighbors thought the Confederates were coming. Thus, the spring was named Mammoth Spring.
